Africa is urbanising at a historically rapid rate, creating some of the region’s greatest development challenges, but also offering tremendous opportunities for advancing sustainable development in the region. The Sustainable Development Goal 11 on cities recognises the central role of urbanisation in sustainable development, and calls for making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Advances in science and technology – especially progress in transportation, communication systems, public health, and agricultural and industrial production – have significantly contributed to the evolution of cities. To further explore the potential of science in supporting the development of new approaches and strategies towards the innovative re-thinking of urban futures in Africa, the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources in partnership with the National Commission for Science and Technology of Malawi will host a scientific event with international and national experts on the 8th of February 2018.
