Introduction

AquaTrans (Transformation of Aquaculture, Fish Processing and Value Addition In The SADC Region) is the first regional training course being offered by Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) with support from New Partnership for Africa Development – Southern Africa Network for Biosciences (NEPAD-SANBio) BioFISA II Programme (a Finnish-Southern African Partnership Programme).

AquaTrans aims at providing a platform of knowledge and skills sharing among stakeholders for strengthened capacity in aquaculture technologies and thus contributing towards sustainable aquaculture expertise in the region.

LUANAR through Fish Node and AquaFish Center of Excellence, invites potential investors, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs), private sector, policy makers, academicians, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and researchers, within the SANBio Member States (Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Malawi, Namibia, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Seychelles, Madagascar and Zambia) to participate in this training. Individuals and organizations/representatives in the SANBio member states are eligible to apply for participation. Women and youths (<35 years) are particularly encouraged to apply.

 Critical success factors for Aquaculture business.
 Development of Bankable business Plan for Aquaculture business.
 Operational of Medium large scale Aquaculture business.
 Successful marketing, processing and value additional of fish and fish products.
 Field Visit to medium and large scale aquaculture ventures.

Funding Opportunity
SANBio will be able to cover travel, accommodation, lunch and tea costs for 25 participants. Those who are selected will be required to contribute ZAR1851.85 (MWK100, 000/ USD138.89) for international participants and ZAR 1,333.30 (MWK72,000/USD 100) for Malawian participants to cover for airport shuttles and in country travel from the hotel to training venue during the training. The participants will be responsible for their dinner and visa fees if necessary.

                                                                                MEET THE TRAINERS

Prof Tom Hecht is one of the leading Aquaculture and Fisheries Scientist in Africa and West Indian Ocean region. He has 40years experience of science, research and industry development experience. He has been entrusted by national, regional and local governments to establish development frameworks and policy, governing aquaculture and fisheries sector and industry programmes.

Prof Emmanuel Kaunda is a Professor of Fisheries Science at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Fisheries (LUANAR) who has led several Aquaculture programs for the African regions as well as innovations in Science and Technologies in fisheries. He is the co-founder of African Fisheries Experts Network (AfrFishNet) a fisheries voice for CAADP, through which more than 20 NAIPS were reviewed to ensure that fish is appropriately positioned. He also has over 50 publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He is the Coordinator of the NEPAD Fish Node of SANBio.

Dr. Wilson Jere is an Associate Professor in Fish Genetics in the Aquaculture and Fisheries Science. He is current Head of Department and Chairperson of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (FSTAP) in Malawi whose role is to enhance the coordination role among stakeholders in development of science based, demand driven fisheries management, governance and value chain knowledge

Dr.Daniel Sikawa is an Associate Professor in Aquatic Resources Management. He has special interest in Aquaculture Production Systems and has vast experience in integrated agriculture and aquaculture systems. He is currently Dean in the Faculty of Environmental Science. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 2010 in aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management, from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand

Dr William Kasapila heads the Department of Food Science and Technology at LUANAR. He has a PhD in Food Science from the School of Food Science at Universiti Sabah Malaysia (UMS) in 2013. Dr Kasapila has published a book with VDM Verlag Publishing House and authored a number of articles in Food Science.

Dr Joseph Dzanja, proficient in Agri-Business Management, with an entrepreneurial acumen, holds a PhD in Agricultural Economics from University of Wales – Aberystwyth, UK. He has vast experience as Investment Analyst and has provided a cascade of trainings on entrepreneurship to various companies and SMMEs in the country as well as the region.
