RUFORUM – NCST OUTSTANDING YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) in collaboration with the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST), run the 2017 RUFORUM –NCST Outstanding Young Scientist Award competition. The competition was locally managed by the National Commission for Science and Technology, while the prize money, certificate and trophy were provided by the RUFORUM. Specifically the NCST:

  • Published a call for nominations for nominations
  • Received nominations
  • Established an independent scientific jury to assess the applications
  • Recommended the successful nominees to RUFORUM for approval
  • Read the citations for the awardees at the award presentation ceremony

Two awardees, Dr. Chomora Mikeka and Dr. Tiiwonge Manda both of Chancellor College, University of Malawi, were recognized and awarded the RUFORUM-NCST Outstanding Young Scientists Award, which took place on 26th October, 2017 at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, Malawi. The award presentation was part of the 2017 RUFORUM Annual General Meeting. The awardees received Cash Prize of USD1000 each; a certificate and trophy. Honourable George Kronnisanyon Werner, Minister of Education, Government of Liberia and Honourable Dr. Muyingo John Chrysostom, Minister of State for Higher Education, Government of Uganda handed over the awards to the winning scientists. The citations of the two awardees were read by Mr. Symon Mandala, Chief and Head of Technology Transfer at the NCST on behalf of the Director General.

Also awarded were five model farmers from Malawi and IMPRESSA Award Winners, which recongizes outstanding university leaders and faculty staff for their contribution to university advancement in terms of leadership, research, training and outreach and indeed to society.
