NCST Signs Mou With Bahgat Group Of Companies On Science And Technology Research And Development

The NCST and Bahgat Group of Companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a platform of cooperation in the fields of research and development, innovation and technology. Signing on behalf of the NCST was the Directory General, Anthony Muyepa and on behalf of the Bahgat Group was the Chairman of the congromalate, A. Bahgat. The ceremony was witnessed by the Secretary General of COMESA, Dr. Sindiso Ngwenya who accompanied the Bahgat Group into the country. The Malawi Investment Promotion Centre (MIPC) facilitated the visit of the BAHGAT GROUP from Egypt who visited the country to explore investment options, including the area of Science and Technology. 

The Parties are interested in pursuing cooperative opportunities in Research and Development, Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Household Appliance Technology Development and Transfer, Human Capacity Development, Exchange of Scientific Knowledge between Groups of Scientists the Modality of which will be agreed upon by the Parties, Medical Research using nanotechnology, Establishing medical diagnostic centers in the member states, Waste management (i.e sugar , coffee, pineapple, medical ,rice wastes among others)

The cooperation between the Parties will set up platforms to facilitate networking among research institutions, government, academia and industry with a view to encouraging and promoting collaborative national R&D, technology and innovation capabilities. The MOU will also explore the establishment of R& D industrial development and innovation grant schemes in Malawi to support industrial research, technology development and innovation with support and facilitation of COMESA.

Bahgat Group is a group of companies in Egypt that manufacture electronics, household appliances, furniture, and medical equipment. It is also involved in entertainment and real estate development

 The cooperation will also explore:

  1. Joint research and development projects including exchange of their results as well as exchange of scientists, specialists and researchers;
  2. Organization and participation in joint scientific meetings, conferences, symposia, workshops, exhibitions, etc;
  3. Exchange of scientific, technological and traditional knowledge and documentation;
  4. Joint use of research and development facilities and scientific equipment;
  5. Other forms of scientific and technological cooperation which may be mutually agreed upon;
  6. Participating in regional platforms
