During the recently held ICT week, the National Commission for Science and Technology has recognized Dr Chomora Mikeka of Chancellor College for his achievements in ICT research.
Dr Mikeka is a senior lecturer in the Department of Physics at Chancellor College in the University of Malawi and supervises international postgraduate students from Uppsala, Sweden in their minor field studies in electromagnetics. Apart from being a lecturer, Dr. Chomora Mikeka coordinates the e-Communications Research Group (eCRG) in the Physics Department on energy, wireless and radio communications technologies, healthcare applications and biomedical engineering. He is the Project Director for the Malawi TV White Spaces (TVWS) technology for rural broadband connectivity.
He has several awards to his name, among them the 2009 European Microwave Association (EuMA) Student Challenge Prize in Rome (Italy). He also won the 2011 IEEE RWW, Biomedical Radio and Wireless Technologies, Network and Sensing Systems Second Best Paper Award in Phoenix, Arizona (USA). Another accolade to his name is the IEEE RFID-TA 2011, Third Best Paper Award in Sitges, Barcelona (Spain) and the 2010 Yokohama National University International Science Exchange Encouragement Award in Yokohama (Japan). Dr Mikeka is also the recipient of the (2014 – 2019) Associateship at the Abdus Salam ICTP in Trieste, Italy and that makes him one of the distinguished scientists in developing countries.His biography is included in the 27th edition of Marquis Who’s Who in the World. He is the Laureate of IBC TOP 100 ENGINEERS in 2010.
In appreciation of his various works in the development ICT, NCST which is there to advance science and technology issues in Malawi, recognised him as the best ICT researcher in the country and honoured him with a token of appreciation of K200, 000.00. The Vice President of the Republic of Malawi, Hon Khumbo Kachali, handed over the cheque to Dr Mikeka on 11th December at the close of the ICT week.
