The winner of the 2013 AU- TWAS young scientist award is Dr Cosmo Ngongondo , Associate Professor
in the Department of Earth Sciences at Chancellor College of the University of Malawi.
This award is locally administered by the National Commission for Science and Technology on behalf of the African Union and the Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries. It is given to a young scientist under the age of 40 who has proved his worth by the amount and quality of research and also the
number of publications published in peer reviewed journals.

Dr Ngongondo was born in 1975 and graduated with a BSc from the University of Malawi in 2000. He as immediately employed by the University of Malawi as a Staff Associate/Assistant Lecturer. He was awarded a Master of Science in Water Resources Engineering in 2003. He has a PHD in Hydrology from the University of Oslo in Norway.

He has done a number of Research studies and has published a lot. In summary his research work has helped in improving understanding of the hydrology and water resources in Malawi and Southern Africa under changing climate; testing and improvement of robust methods and models for assessing projecting climate change impacts on water resources suitable for data scarce regions; integrating science and indigenous knowledge systems in climate change adaptation.
The award ceremony took place at Chancellor College on Thursday, 28th November, 2013 and was presided over by the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Hon Dr. Lucious Kanyumba.
