Minister of Higher Education, Honourable Dr Jessie Kabwila, has emphasised the urgent need for significant investment in the science and innovation sectors, stating that such support is crucial for Malawi’s socio-economic development.
Speaking during a courtesy call meeting with the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) board at the Ministry’s headquarters in Lilongwe on Friday , 2 May 2025, Dr Kabwila highlighted the government’s commitment to revitalising higher education and fostering innovation.
She stated that President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is dedicated to enhancing higher education in the country by ensuring that institutions of higher learning receive adequate funding.
She indicated that as part of this initiative, the Ministry is planning to develop a special grant program aimed at supporting innovation and research.
Dr Kabwila assured the NCST of the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate closely with the Commission to promote innovative products, add value to local technologies, and encourage science tourism.
“We need to create mechanisms that support and reward innovation; this will not only strengthen our research capacity but also improve the quality and impact of Malawian products,” she stated.
Additionally, Dr Kabwila called on technocrats within the NCST and the Ministry to develop platforms, such as innovation expos, to showcase Malawi’s potential in science and technology.
According to Dr Kabwila, these events will provide opportunities for young innovators to present their ideas and attract investment and partnerships.
In his remarks, the NCST board Chairperson, Professor David Mkwimbisi, confirmed the Commission’s commitment to diligently advance the country’s aspirations in promoting science and innovation.
