The Malawi Academy of Sciences (TAS) in collaboration with the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) on Wednesday 18th February, 2026 held an inauguration ceremony for 22 newly elected TAS fellows.The fellows are accomplished and renowned scholars and professionals in medical sciences engineering, agriculture, mathematics, social and environmental sciences, and statistical sciences, who were elected through a rigorous peer-review process.Speaking during the inauguration ceremony Deputy Director of Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. George Vakusi describes the Academy as a catalyst for progress which is poised to foster and advance scientific knowledge in the country.“The Academy will coordinate the expertise of scientists to transform inventions into innovations, thereby enhancing national competitiveness and the well-being of Malawians,” he explained.The Academy was established in 2021 and operates under the mandate of the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) to bring together scientists and other experts to help address critical scientific issues in Malawi. The Academy of Sciences operates as a “Think and Do Tank” at the national level. In his remarks, Chairperson for the NCST Board of Commissioners, Mr Hester Nyasulu said the inauguration of the fellows signals that Malawi is ready to elevate science as a national asset.“Today, we are laying a cornerstone for Malawi’s intellectual sovereignty, scientific excellence, and innovation-driven development,” Nyasulu said.The ceremony was also attended by the Chairperson of the Vice Chancellors Committee, Professor Emmanuel Kaunda, who commended the fellows for their dedication to addressing the country’s social and economic challenges.
